Emma Bridgewater established her successful pottery business in 1985. She found a manufacturer in Stoke-on-Trent to produce a range of mugs, jugs and teapots inspired by traditional shapes and spongeware designs. Buyer beware: this paperback edition contains only the stories and none of the photographs of the hardcover edition. I consider this quite misleading, as the reviews here mention photography but are clearly referring to a completely different edition that is in hardcover. If you click on the hardcover edition you will see lots of lovely photos. This paperback has tiny engravings at the chapter headings and that's it. I did look at the "look inside" but since that is a limited view it wasn't clear to me that this was only a stripped-down version of the hardcover.

I buy a lot of these sort of books, I am intimate with my ups man. Often I am disappointed as the cover art is the best part of the book. Since Ithink this is one of the BEST COVERS EVER I was afraid this might be the case with Toast and Marmalade...but NO! This book is chock full of Emma telling us why she does what she does, her motivation for working with local manufacturers, her very real relationships with her family and conspirators, and a bit, although not enough, about her design process. If I have one criticism that would be it; there is a lot in the book about the manufacturing process and not enough about the work that takes her from concept to a fully executed design. I want drawings, doodles, whatever she does. The photography is gorgeous and yet it doesn't feel overly styled. I recommend Toast and Marmalade.

If you enjoy Emma's work you will love reading her stories. Her pottery is how she illustrates her stories...what a great story teller!

About the Author

Carrol L. Henderson has headed the Nongame Wildlife Program of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources since 1977. He is an award-winning wildlife conservationist who has helped bring back eastern bluebirds, bald eagles, peregrine falcons, river otters, and trumpeter swans; an avid wildlife photographer whose images have appeared in the New York Times, Audubon, Birder's World, and Wild Bird; an experienced birding tour leader to Latin America, Kenya, Tanzania, and New Zealand; and the author of many magazine articles and several books. In 2016, the Garden Club of America awarded Henderson the Frances K. Hutchinson Medal, which is given to figures of national importance for distinguished service to conservation. In 2012, he received the Gary T. Myers Bird Conservation Award from the US Fish and Wildlife Service, recognizing him as the top bird conservationist in North America.

I bought this book to take on a trip to CR. As soon as I received it, I knew it was not what I had in mind. I would not call this a "field guide" as it had so few species included. I took photos in one day of more organisms than this book covered. If you are a traveler who is curious about what you might see, this book might be fine. If you are a hobby naturalist trying to identify actual moths, etc, then this will not help. Disappointing.

This was a gift and greatly appreciated for their upcoming Costa Rica trip!

Good info on inverts of Costa Rica

I know there are more exhaustive guides available but they are too heavy for hiking. This suited my needs well.

Obviously, one book can't cover the hundreds (or thousands) of invertebrate species found in a tropical country. But, there does appear to be a good selection of what are probably the most common species--and certainly enough species to keep the first-time visitor to Costa Rica busy. The format is one species per page. Some species have more than one image if there are different color phases. The images and range maps are excellent.

I liked the book. t covered 50% of what I needed for my biology class.

I purchased this book because I have a child with severe anxiety. The first chapter was great! The second chapter spoke about a drug causing serious weight gain, 80 lbs! I can let my daughter read this because she has a history of an eating disorder. Not helpful!!!!

This is an important book. Everyone should read it.

The authors bear their souls to help others dealing with personal struggles!Thirty-one authors share their experiences in dealing with mental illness within the pages of this book. Maureen Johnson discusses her anxiety and how meditation and slowing down her schedule helped and continues to help her. I like her comparison of anxiety being a stupid monster that doesn’t know anything. Robison Wells discusses mental illness treatments and the mental illnesses he lives with. Lauren Oliver relates her depression to mental stutters; we may all trip up at one time or another. Jennifer L. Armentrout talks about her suicide attempt and suicidal thoughts. Amy Reed shares her experiences with addiction and depression. Aprilynne Pike explains her compulsive behavior. Rachel M. Wilson’s dilemma of OCD and ADHD combined is shared. Dan Wells remembers his grandparents and the dementia and Alzheimer’s they dealt with. Amber Benson shares the gift of therapy and how she believes there’s no difference between having mental health problems or physical health problems; they both need help. E. K. Anderson unravels in poetic form. Sarah Fine is an author and a clinical psychologist. Kelly Fiore-Stultz speaks of addiction and family members. Ellen Hopkins shares her grandson’s story. Oh boy. This was a great book to read and to start conversations, but it was also hard to read because of the subject matter. I love that so many authors shared their stories and I hope that this book spurs conversations among teens. I hope they see they are not alone. I hope they find themselves sharing their own stories. There isn't any judgement here, it's all very matter of fact. I love that so many of the essays talked about what worked for them and how it won't work for everyone. I love how they advice readers to get help and figure out the method that might work best for them. This book is so powerful - from the number of authors sharing their stories to the range of mental illnesses shared. It's an eye opening read.

I love this book. I enjoyed all the different stories and how each one was different. The struggles that people go through are as different as, how different we look to each other. One person tall while the other person is short. One person's struggles are different for the person next to you.I found some of the stories I like more than the others, some I related to better than others but each story is important. Even though this book does cover many, many much need topics it still made me giggle with funny, witty lines. Cleave writers with power stories.I checked this out from my library.

Standout essays included those written by Jennifer L. Armentrout, Melissa Marr, Maureen Johnson, and Cindy L. Rodriguez.I received an eARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I can't say how much I am thankful for this book! It's great seeing these lovely popular authors share personal stories that can help inspire this generation and hopefully break the stigma on mental illness. As someone who also suffers from mental illness, this was an inspiring!
