Review

“A riveting story of one brave woman’s fight to become a world class athlete and compete in the Ironman, and how the lessons she learned competing helped her save her family. A must read.” —Susan Butler, author of East to the Dawn: The Life of Amelia Earhart“I have been privileged to coach and be around many great athletes, including Lee. What sets truly great athletes apart is character, and character transcends sports. Lee’s character is the star of this book about dealing with and overcoming unthinkable personal tragedy, the likes of which could only be dreamt up by some warped Hollywood fiction writer. Yet it is all true and Lee and her family survived, and we are blessed with an amazing story of a personal odyssey, which will inspire us all.” —Tracy Sundlun, former Olympic track & field coach and co-founder of the Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon series“I have known Lee for two decades as a runner and fellow competitor. Her character is true gold and her commitment to any project she dedicates herself to, whether qualifying for the Olympic Trials or writing a book for publication, is rock solid. I know Lee’s story will be read with great interest in the running community and beyond.” —Gordon Bakoulis

I loved this book!! Several years ago, when my youngest was still a toddler, I would head out early with him and our German Shepherd for a run around our beautiful coastal town of Newport, RI. One morning on one of these runs, a vision approached from the distance. Rapidly approached. To me, she was Running, personified!! Beautiful, fast, and lovely. I saw her many more times, and was honored when she introduced herself to me following a local race one day. Lee DiPietro was her name.Last Fall, when I read in our little newspaper that she had written a book, I was so excited, and when I read it a couple of months later, I was really moved. The book is tremendous, and I am so glad that Lee shared such an intimate story, because the strength that she exhibited through her family's horrific trials was truly inspiring. Also, the LOVE that she possesses! Not just in her dark moments, but in the more mundane times, such as filling the Christmas stockings. Wow, did she leave an impression on my soul as a mother and wife!! Her ENERGY too!!! Love-Strength-Energy. Lee has these in spades.Another great thing about this book is that it is such a love story. A very special love story between two people in a time when I feel the landscape for real romance and marital love is largely barren. Also, Lee's mother and step-father's love also very special and rich. One final thing I would like to mention is something that I hold very dear to my heart, and that is the topic of alcohol/alcoholism. This comes up in this story, and Lee says at one point, semi-confidentially, that alcoholism runs in her family (or something to that effect.) I believe that every single reader must have nodded and thought to themselves that alcoholism runs in their family too. I have never heard of a family that has not been ravaged by alcohol, through the struggles of at least one family member. And, for some reason, this fact is not widely talked about or even acknowledged. In my own family, my paternal grandmother and maternal aunt suffered and died from alcohol, and my sister, though "dry" at the moment, has been brought nearly to her knees by her addiction. Once I finally made the observation that so many people suffer from alcohol, either directly through their own addiction or through the suffering of loved ones, I gave up on alcohol altogether. First, I want to show loved ones, like my sister, that life is worth living without alcohol, and, second, I want to be an example to the next generation. I mention this only because I don't think the idea to abstain occurs to many people who are not suffering personally from their own addiction, and it might help.Very finally, a small detail which I loved: reference to Dr. Ben Carson!! I found it thrilling that the Di Pietros know him and have worked with him. Dr. Carson is a hero of mine. He has been since I first learned about him over 15 years ago in "The Read-Aloud Handbook" (for parents), in which "Gifted Hands" was described. I have since read "Gifted Hands' as well as "Think Big," and they affected me profoundly. I am still hoping he will be our VP, and then President one day!I definitely recommend this beautiful book!! For everyone!!

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2015 and started out with target therapy with chemotherapy. I continued to work full-time while managing treatments and various doctor appointments. I had very little time to be a knowledgeable cancer patient and not much time to reach out to cancer community to build support network. I managed to have my surgery before completing standard six rounds and finally got around to read cancer books while recovering from the surgery during winter break.I had bought various types of publications regarding cancer, but Lee DiPietro’s “Against the Wind” stands out from other cancer books. I found American Cancer Society’s “Breast Cancer Journey” helpful to be comprehensive and through about any stage of the “journey”. However most books were trying to lure you into alternative therapies or simply a collection of sharing experiences. While it is good to know you are not the only one going through the same, sometimes it didn’t sound very positive or giving hope and strength. Lee’s book is not only a detailed record of how her husband, a cancer patient, went through diagnosis to cure, but also it shows how two overcame the obstacles together with love and support of family. And husband’s cancer was only one of the tragedies. Her athletic achievements were sprinkled as flashback highlighting support of family and close ones are important on top of obvious physical challenge and determination. She is showing that her courage and strength to face the obstacles she earned through her athletic career helped along with family support and love. This book is an inspiration at many levels: for a caregiver of cancer patient, a patient himself/herself and anybody who aspires athletic achievement. And really for anybody as cancer and accident do not exclude anybody. It illustrates her determination; love and support of family to encourage you can do the same.

I loved this book! This book is not just for the running world, but anyone who would enjoy hearing a personal family journey of tragedy, perseverance, grit, hard work, faith, but most of all love! I think most could find a way to relate to this book whether you are a mother, father, daughter, son, sibling, grandparent or a friend- this book has it all and it is real life -makes you think. As a mom, wife, daughter and sister (well and also a UNC Tarheel) I could relate to so many of the feelings and descriptions in this book. I laughed and I cried! I am passing this book onto my mom and hope if you are reading this review, you buy the book. You will not be disappointed!

Against the Wind illustrates the power of love to create a family system able to function even amidst extreme adversity. As author Lee Dipietro embarks on her journey of self expression through running she has the full support of her husband, children, mom and extended family. At the same time, she never loses site of her priority of wife and mom. The family is unified and strengthened by her dedication and success. When those closest to her encounter the challenges of cancer and a serious car accident, Lee digs deep into that wellspring of love as she is called on to support husband and son on their journey of healing. Little did she know that the positive self-talk and determination that got her through rigorous endurance training, would give her the strength she would need to face emotional obstacles. Lee’s book teaches important life lessons, especially the value of building relationships, maintaining balance and being mindful in caring for our loved ones.Lee writes as a close friend, sharing her story honestly. She learns the depth of her love for two people she could have lost as well as her extended family and friends. An inspiring and uplifting memoire.
