About the Author

Father Daniel Utrecht is a priest of the Oratory of St Philip Neri, Toronto. He is a graduate of the University of Dallas (B.A., Philosophy), and the University of Toronto (Ph.D., philosophy). He joined the Oratory in 1980 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1985. Father teaches in St Philip's Seminary, directed by the Fathers of the Oratory, and is Pastor of St Vincent de Paul Church in Toronto. Previous publications include a translation of a biography of St Philip Neri, Philip Neri: The Fire of Joy by Paul Türks.

Astounding literary display of the hardships endured by the German people to try and maintain their Religious Freedom under a continuing oppressive government suppression. The historical documentation of the 1930's in Nationalist Socialism Germany is well referenced and concise. Does not read like a history textbook but rather a story portrayed by the author as if he were their alongside the Cardinal referred to as the "Lion of Munster." The most dramatic lesson to take away from the book is the similarities of our present day attack on Religious Freedoms from the government and the time of Cardinal Van Galen. History does repeat itself. This is why revisionist desire to change. This book will sober the reader to the point of realizing how close America is to losing what Natural Law dictates to mankind. I encourage all to read this excellent book. You will not be disappointed.

Very informative as it filled in a lot of holes for that period of history in Germany. Bishop Von Galen was truly a humble and courageous man!

The book, The Lion of Munster, was one that was difficult to put down. It read like a novel. What impressed me the most was the fact that so many German people in the Munster area, lead by their strong and brave Catholic bishop, supported his stance in defying the Nazis. While the bishop's very public stance made the Nazis afraid to arrest him, many of the bishop's priests were arrested instead. All of them were heroic. Most do doubt joined the over 1800 Catholic priests that were in the Dachau Concentration Camp. In my opinion, they too shared in the lionization that their bishop so rightly earned. Great read!

A must read. Similarities between what happened in schools in Nazi Germany and what is happening in schools in US today are frightening.

I have a particular interest in German resistance during the time of the Nazis. I've read about Bonhoeffer, the White Rose, Alfred Delp and Franz Jagerstatter. But I had not really heard that much about Clemens August Graf von Galen, the Bishop of Munster from 1933 to 1946. From the very beginning of Hitler's reign von Galen became a thorn in the regime's side. He fought the Nazis on their racial policies, on their intrusions in to Catholic education, the descent into paganism and finally the Nazi program of euthanasia. Here we have a real hero who is as relevant today as he was was all those years ago. Von Galen recognized that the Nazis were in the process of eliminating free thought and those who refused to go along with the new ideology were considered anti-social. Think about what's going on today and you'll easily find parallels. Buy this book and buy one for a friend. It's also an excellent read.
