About the Author

Angela Rock is one of volleyball s most decorated players and coaches, both indoor and on the beach. After a Hall of Fame career, where she led San Diego State University to two NCAA Final Fours, the First Team All-American joined the US National Team. During her five years with the team, she competed in the Goodwill Games, the World Championships, the Pan Am Games and, most notably, the Olympics in Seoul Korea in 1988. She earned the team s Most Valuable Player award in 1985. Following a stellar indoor career, Rock transitioned to the beach game where she was dominant on both the Women s Professional Volleyball Association and the Federation Internationale de Volleyball tours. She won 27 events during her 13-years on the beach, including 12 titles in 1991 when she was voted the WPVA tour s Best Hitter. In 1992 Rock competed in Almeria, Spain and won the Silver medal in the exhibition of Olympic beach volleyball. Not surprisingly, she has been inducted into the Beach Volleyball Hall of Fame. Rock retired from play in 2000 and launched a coaching career that also ran the gamut between indoor and beach. Indoor, she has coached at the developmental level working with club juniors, served as Assistant Coach at University of California, Santa Barbara and as Head Coach at the University of Alaska Fairbanks where she set a record for Pacific West Conference victories. Most recently she was the Head Coach for Southwestern College near her hometown of San Diego. On the beach, Angela coached the US doubles volleyball team at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, the inaugural year of the Olympic sport. Since then, she has coached numerous collegiate, Olympic and professional beach volleyball players. Rock is currently a Professor of Health and Exercise Science at Southwestern Community College near San Diego. She holds Masters Degrees in both Physical Education and Education.

Powered through this in one session (then re-read a few days later), it's not long, and easy to read. There were a lot of great tactical insights in Angela's book and good explanations of why and when to deploy particular strategies. The book has given me some new things to talk about and work on with a few of my most advanced high school players who are ready for more. I also got a chuckle out of the Kathy Gregory references whose indoor classes I took at UCSB when I was first learning to play and who I had the good fortune of playing against one afternoon a few years later at East Beach. I remember the good natured taunts - and her shots that made you feel like no matter where you were playing defense that you were nearly always in the wrong place and having to run everything down!

Yes!!!! I've been excited about this book and anxious to read it for a long time. I was definitely not disappointed. Having the opportunity to be coached by Angela Rock, I knew there was going to be some unique and valuable wisdom about the game of beach volleyball. She is such a strong woman, knowledgeable and tough coach, and a great role model for all athletes. What I didn't know is how well should would weave in stories of the greats who we all know and love, along with her personal stories of both success and heartache as a pro player and coach. The icing on the cake is her awesome sense of humor which keeps you engaged throughout the whole book. Angela Rock is a gift to the beach volleyball world and this book is so needed! Thanks Rock!

full with interesting strategies and ways to play the game that would take a long time to figure out all by yourself. fun to read about beach volleyball because there arnt so many books out there. however, if one is looking for information on beach volleyball technique this is not that book, it is more about strategy once you have sufficient technique.

Great book. If you play beach volleyball it is worth reading because it will re-enforce basic concepts as well as provide a new strategies for even the most experience players.

Great coaching tips

This did a great job of digging into the deeper aspects of the game and shifting my viewpoint about how to talk about the game to the players I coach and how to apply it to my own game.

The first time I understant game dynamics. The whole topic is broken down into the topics, so not necesarry to read frm the beginning.

A great source of information coming from one of the greatest who's ever played the game. A fun read, too!
