The author is not a traditional purist who says you need a 6' selfbow with wood arrows. His advice is for the modern traditional archer. Having hunted with traditional equipment for a few years, I didn't get a lot out of the book except to confirm that I was mostly doing things the right way. However, if you're new to trad hunting, this will accelerate your learning curve by a few years. Wish I'd read this 5 years ago!

I'm returning to archery after years away. I've used a recurve in college, but getting into using longbows in the SCA. I'm 2/3 of the way through the book, so here's my first thoughts. Decent info to explain things I didn't fully understand in the different types of long bows available today, from reflex-deflex, to flat bows; decent info on grips & various accessories; how to prepare your bow was decent but not in any full detail. Good info on arrows, but he prefers modern ones. His focus is more on bow hunting, so there is info on that. Lots less info on target shoots, but there is some info on targets. He discusses form and practice, with info on improvements over time. There is a glossary in the back for those unfamiliar words. I do like his writing style, but his focus is modern longbows for hunting, and the side stories are lessons themselves. Overall seems to be a decent book that is enjoyably written, but lacks some details I want to know more about as a beginner, especially for SCA focused shooting. It could also do with more photos and maybe some diagrams to better explain some things.

I liked the even approach to shooting the longbow. It was interesting enough that I read it through in two sittings. It was an encouraging book. I was not familiar with the author, but I am very glad I read his book. I liked the arrangement of the book. I cannot think of any aspect of the sport he has not addressed well. His assessment of equipment and suppliers is spot on. I highly recommend this book.

This is a great book for anyone interested in shooting or hunting with a longbow. This book is concise and to the point.

I have been an archer for 50 years. Sorrells' book is a good introduction to the fundamental postulates of shooting a traditional bow, longbow or recurve.
