About the Author

Sally Balch Hurme is an elder law attorney currently with the AARP Health Education team explaining the workings of the Affordable Care Act and the Health Insurance Marketplaces. She has also worked on a wide variety of issues including advance care planning, surrogate decision making, consumer fraud, elder abuse and financial security. Ms. Hurme was an advisor to the Uniform Law Commission in the drafting of the uniform guardianship jurisdiction act. She also was a member of the U.S. State Department delegation that drafted the Hague International Convention on the Protection of Adults. She has authored 20 law review articles and book chapters on various elder law issues and taught elder law at George Washington University Law School. She is author of The ABA Checklist for Family Heirs and ABA/AARP Checklist for Family Survivors. She received her law degree from the Washington College of Law at American University, Washington, D.C., and her bachelor's degree from Newcomb College, Tulane University in New Orleans.

Don't know why AARP doesn't offer such documents complimentary to its members. I was able to download a similar document at "What My Family Needs To Know," a free government PDF document with many similar pages.

I purchased 2 organizers -- and I'm returning this one. The structure is inflexible and inefficient. (27 pages to document incomplete info about my family?!) It's not well organized. I'm keeping Nolo's Get it Together. It's a similar product, but better meets my needs.

This 250 page "checklist" makes the process unnecessarily complicated if you do not have an extensive estate. Most of this information is common sense that if you spend a day thinking about it, you'll know what to do. The online forms are buried on the ABA website and anyone can print those out for free, once they find them. The book would have been more useful if the pages were perforated so that you can remove what you actually need and put in a binder.

I bought the book and found the concept valuable, but I ended up using the PDF forms that I was able to download from the internet. The problem with the book is that there are many pages you will not need and it is not easy to update. The PDF version solves both problems since you only need to print the pages you need, and you can update whenever details change.

Not what I expected. Difficult to use. Who needs 5 pages for pets? And then only 8 lines for personal beliefs? . Would work well as a class sponsored by AARP. Should have 2 sets for a couple to use together. Especially now that marriage equality is a reality.

You can download the forms from the ABA site. There's some info in the book about completing the forms and why you need them and then all the printed forms. But they could basically just charge a small fee to download the forms.Frankly, there is so much information on the forms that it would be a identify thief's dream. If you fill out the forms in the book, make sure you put it in a VERY secure location. If you fill out digital versions, encrypt them or password protect. But then they are hard for your family to find/access. Tough decision. And I really don't see why your executor needs most of that information. I probated my father's estate and didn't have most of this. Do they really need passport number, complete info on 1st, 2nd, 3rd spouses, awards? There's a lot of medical stuff on the Personal inventory. These should be on separate Medical form. A lot of stuff can be left blank and I think that they just put all of it in to make the book look bigger. This is way more than the average person needs for an estate. If you're writing a biography of your life these forms are helpful.

As with any universal product, the checklists included are mostly useful, and also have a lot of areas not applicable to my needs. Just use what you need. The AARP link to the PDF files works on some computers and not others, mostly due to security settings. If a DVD version of the forms was available, they would be worth $10 or so if mailing was included.

This is a wonderful way to start the tough job of itemizing your life to ease your family's work. We had just gone through a difficult probate that should have been simple, but the records were scattered in boxes, computer files and banks. That prompted us to look for a way to help our children avoid some of the pitfalls we faced. The book is a good start, but we find that it ignores the fact that some couples are equal partners and have separate data to share. The way the book is set up, there is plenty of room for one and then much smaller areas for the second person.
