#14,241 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This fourth book in the series is easily the best yet. Sean and his growing cast of mates and friends are deep in their struggle to free the lycanthropes from slavery to the wizards. There’s a nice mystery developing around the special place of werelions in the world of lycanthropes and a great subplot involving the assassin that killed Sean’s father. The action is fast paced and easy to read. In fact, despite two three star reviews I’ve given earlier books in the series, I pre-ordered this one when it came out and read it as soon as it was published. So it is a likeable series with engaging characters and a pretty tight storyline.Yet my biggest complaint remains. There are almost no differences between the different species of wereanimals other than superficial ones. Cheetahs are fast, lions sleep around a lot, etc. I think that a series in which lycanthopes play such an important role ought to do the creatures justice by permitting the werebeasts to be different from each other. I also think we need to see lycanthropes struggling to control their beasts. Laurell K. Hamilton pulls this off extremely well. Stryvant doesn’t appear to be interested in the issue and I think it hurts his world building. That being said, I’ll be pre-ordering the next book as soon as it becomes available.

This one upset me a little. Peggy is now a vixen who’s hesitant to sleep around even though her vixen wants to. Some of her misgivings are based upon bigotry, but I don’t think forcing her to shift so she can go “play” is consent. She may be a romantic or she simply may NOT be a slut. It doesn’t matter. She doesn’t want to sleep around. It’s worse because the moral high ground is based upon Lycans being more “open” towards sex. Loyalty to self doesn’t make you a prude. There’s more, but I don’t want to spoil anything.

Our hero, Sean, is getting extra serious now. One of the Mage Councils have brought back the hitman who killed his father. He’s also looking for an Alpha werewolf to replace the one that he kicked out of the Lycan fellowship. He’s trying to convince his 4th wife to move in with them, and then goes and gets himself a hot little vixen as his 5th.Then some interesting combat to free some more wolves, and a great big twist in the last few pages of the book.Excellent book, probably the best so far in the series.

As if poor Sean doesn't have enough problems, now he's got the same guy that killed his father after him. But he's also got five--or is it six--lovely kick-ass mates and a lot of friends, ranging from the father of his first mate who is sheriff of Las Vegas, to Sawyer, a green pointy-eared, pointy-nosed goblin with an attitude. Sean learns a lot more about how magic and computer programming can be wound together, and he also learns just how and why his father made a deal with his killer to save Sean and his mother. Great series! I'm eagerly awaiting number 5 and hope to learn more about Sean's lion and his half-fae mother. That should be exciting.

Up front: I like the series, started reading using KU and then bought the whole series because I’ll be rereading them. That said, I’m an editorial geek. Part of what attracted me was how professionally edited the first several books were. That has slid a bit, starting around book 5 or 6. We do notice these things. 😉 It went from an average 1 mistake per 10 pages or so down to 1 in 5-6. Still not too bad, but I figure this might bring it to the author’s attention before it gets to ugly levels.

Unfortunately this series is declining in quality. The magic system and advancement has been totally jettisoned. The main character is totally overpowered and the only reason he hasn't knocked out everyone is the short time frame of each book. The books seem to assume that nothing would get out of Reno. If suddenly a lycan revolution was starting where are the badass mages from other cities, where are the heavy hitters on both sides? The last twist was fairly ridiculous. Did his mother forget his cell phone number?

I would have loved to come across the series when completed. Now I am waiting on #13.It is hard to write such a long series and keep it flowing.Volume 4 the characters continue to develop, problems arise are solved but some are kicked forward. I know I don't have much detail but I feel I have to give this author 5 stars on all the books in this series. I haven't enjoyed such long series since I read Stashsheff's works years ago.

I want to start by saying, this IS a story that involves a harem. But not the typical one. Each woman is sassy and skilled. Jan doesn't go overboard on the sex. What this also is, is funny. There is both tongue in cheek humor, and action packed seriousness. I really recommend this book to any lover of the LitRPG genre, as well as those who love modern fantasy with guns, spells & things going boom.
