RSMeans is a well known name in construction--so well known that I expected much better from this book. Here are some pros and cons of this edition:Pros:You can get a very quick idea of what a broad range of projects will cost. Project costs are itemized in some detail: how much material and how much labor are required for specific size projects. Descriptions also include discussions of project quality differences and of what parts a DIY-er might reasonably complete. As a first pass in cost and time estimating this is very helpful information. Additionally, the book provides regional factors for adjusting project costs to local conditions. Also very helpful.But on moving beyond the first pass of estimating, the book falls short in the following ways:First, and most annoying, there is no discussion of labor costs by trade. Wallpaper hangers don't make the same as tile layers who don't make the same as plumbers. Thus, there is no way to estimate what you would really save using paint instead of wallpaper. You could estimate your savings based on the project's average hourly labor charge but this will be wildly misleading. And the average charge is the only number you can calculate from the project sheets because you are given only labor hours--not labor costs.Second, project details aren't consistent: bathroom projects include line items for electric outlets, switches, and lights. Kitchens do not. Lighting is a major element in good kitchen design. Where are these costs?Third, there is no discussion of demolition costs: What does it cost to rip out your old kitchen or bath before installing the new one? Similarly, it's not clear whether project costs listed for plumbing are for relocating drains or simply hooking up to existing locations. This can be a major cost factor.Why do these "cons" matter? Remodeling an island kitchen can cost $16,653 (p.127) or the same size kitchen remodel can cost $36,050 (p.129). This isn't a trivial difference. If you are trying to determine whether your proposed project is closer to $16k then $36k, you need better information than RSMeans provides. Differences in material choices often mean differences in labor hours. So just adjusting your material choices in hopes of controlling your costs could be very misleading.RSMeans could improve this book significantly by1. adding more and better detailed tables of information on "Alternate Materials" (see p. 121), including labor hours & costs and many more interior finish materials,2. adding a table of hourly labor costs by trade and discuss the contractor's role and fee in more detail,3. improving the consistency of the project detail sheets across projects (so that both kitchens and baths would have lighting and electrical outlets),4. providing users with project worksheets that are consistent with the book's project worksheets.The bottom line: Use this book for a first pass, but then, if you are a novice (or even if you aren't) get three professional estimates before you start any significant project.

One of the most interesting thing about this book it allowed me to organize projects like never before. It provides a clear understanding of what to expect when putting together an estimate. It put the project at an ease because this book is simplified!!!

Bought as a Christmas gift for my 7yr old daughter. She's excited to hear Jojo and bowbow's story and add this book to her library. Was pleased with the feel and quality if this paperback book. Book is cute but not for a younger girl. For a 6 or 7 yr old at least.

I'm sure it's my fault, but I thought this was a book for little kids and assumed it would be bright and colorful with lots of pictures. It's not. Its just a regular book. Probably better suited for older kids.

I started playing trumpet again after a 30 year break and needed a book to refresh my memory on how to play and to practice from. This book was not what I anticipated but I am happy I purchased it. My expectation was that the book would have information to refresh my music reading skills but there is none of that in this book. What is in the book are page after page of etudes to practice that get more challenging you as you progress through the book. Although this is not what I expected it is what I needed and am enjoying practicing and learning from the book. Unless I find something I like better I will continue on with this series. I also purchased "All About Trumpet" by Jonathan Harnum which fills the void that this book does not give me and is a great compliment. "All About Trumpet" is an also excellent book that gives great information on everything you need to know about playing the trumpet.Update 4/19/16:I have been playing from this book for a few months now and really enjoy it. The etudes are very challenging and melodic and this is my go to book when I practice. Highly recommended.

as Amazon can verify, I bought a WHOLE bunch of trumpet books all at once.For me, this really hit a sweet spot. I am relearning the trumpet after an extended absence.I will give the ideal profile for someone to buy this. Say you have reconquered say the territory from low b flat to middle c (the one on the from the top space in treble clef) and are having a little trouble going to higher notes but want something to improve your chops while your lips redevelop. The first 17 or so etudes have as the highest note that middle C. It's perfect for me.Unlike other "Studies" or "etudes" books the studies have a GRADUAL progression in difficulty so you can be working on say 7 or so on your daily practice and when you are satisifed on the least difficult one - then drop that one and pick up a more difficult one. I am real happy on how I have progressed the last month or so and this book has a lot ot do with it. Each etude is about 24 to 30 measures long and are actually a little fun to play. It is really focused on trumpet chops. Finally by etude 18 d above middle C is introduced but again in a gradual fashion - about 5 etudes later you will put thorugh your paces on d - having to slur it with just about every note below it. This is in constrast to another book which says in essence "it's time to introduce d and e" and they jump in with full force.To me, this book really has been a key resource that I practice to every day. I cannot say enough good about it. The melodies come back to me during the day.

I think this is a great book for a trumpet student, but when I took the plunge and bought it for our second-year trumpet student, it was based mostly on reviews here. Frankly, they did not give me an accurate idea what to expect. So here's my version.This is a collection of "etudes" -- little melodies that sound much more interesting than a simple series of technical exercises that one might find in a "method" book. And they are graded, or scaled, starting with easier ones on the first pages, and getting gradually harder as you move through the book.As others have noted, the music is very melodic and pleasant to play or hear. This is kind of like having the "spoonful of sugar" to go with the "medicine" that a piece imposes by making the student work on new techniques or skills.I was confused by reviews that lumped this book in with the massive Arban method book or others like that. Many such books focus on techniques and repetitive drills, which have their place but simply are not similar to this book at all.At Amazon I was able to get it as part of a promotion, which made the price downright cheap, and in that respect I'd say it's a no-brainer worth 5 stars. However, the description does not explain that this is not a new printing, but instead is a facsimile reproduction of a publication from some decades ago. As a result, the music is not as clear as it might be, and from time to time, one has to squint to discern a half note from a quarter note.Other than that, I am very pleased with the purchase and recommend it as an adjunct to other lesson books that a student might already be using.

Book 1 of this series is a great start for beginner trumpet players. The melodies are just difficult enough to challenge a new musician to really think about what they are doing. Not too difficult range-wise so you can do several in a lesson. Also, the key signatures are progressively more challenging, which is also an important part of learning to play music. I love the Getchell/Hovey books.

I have played brass instruments for close to 40 years; Professionally as well. I am still a performing musician. I currently teach elementary, junior high and high school level children. I will say that I have 'tried', with much less success, to use other products. However, while there may be other methods / mediums that I choose to ADD to planned courses (which must be specific / unique to a student's abilities), I have never strayed away from using the HL products -- I've found them totally appropriate for all skill levels.The Hal Leonard products cannot be beat. Many (most) public school systems across the United States and Canada have standardized on the HL product line. The HL Essentials series is also very affordable and readily available. While not absolutely necessary, the play-along CD's / DVD's are a bonus.For my courses I use the following:-- Arban's (the trumpeter's Bible).-- Practical Studies for Coronet or Trumpet, books one and two by Robert W. Getchell (Belwin).-- The Hal Leonard Essential Elements 2000 series, books one, two and three.-- The Hal Leonard Essential Elements for Jazz Ensemble (a comprehensive method for jazz style and improvisation).This product is very reasonably priced and produced by a well-known company that continuously upgrades their products. IMHO these are the ONLY tools necessary to teach and learn at ANY level. I even return to them myself from time to time.

Perfect for learning typing the old-fashioned way - a spiral bound book, with lots of practice in a sensible order. It teaches the home row first, then top row, then bottom row. The other advantage is you are NOT looking at the screen while typing, (I recommend putting a piece of cardboard over the screen while typing so you don't cheat). Then you really memorize the locations of the keys. Both of my homeschooled kids learned with this book around age 11 and they can touch-type perfectly now. Such a useful life skill. I used a $2 plastic brochure holder from the office supply store to hold it upright.We tried all the learn-to-type online programs but they were all too cutesy, or too distracting with their games and pressure to go fast. If you have a child who wants a game for reinforcement I recommend the games on Typing.com. But not the learning lessons. This book is much better.

I first got this book out of the library and was impressed with how easy it was to use. I could type a little but not touch-typing. When I stuck to it, my touch-typing improved dramatically. I have never taken typing lessons and being middle-aged, was afraid I'd never be any good at typing, let alone touch-typing. The author teaches you not only typing but about the keyboard, the best way to sit while typing and other useful information. I especially like how you must look at the book to do the lessons, rather than the screen. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to touch-type.

Don't waste money on online typing tutors. Its about training your brain and fingers and this book is perfect. Online games, skill tracking etc is fluff. This is the real deal

This has been great for teaching my sons how to type. I have them type one page a day and within a couple months they went from not knowing at all how to type to typing about 30 wpm.

I just ordered my 8 year olds first laptop. When I seen this book it took me back to the days when I was in school and how they use to teach us in typing class. Needless to say it's helped her typing a lot. She's definitely ahead of the class when it comes to her computer classes thanks to this book!

I purchased this book for a friend of mine to improve her typing skills. I occasionally develop my own drill pages for her when I think she needs more but that's not difficult to do. I find the print a bit small in this book but definitely workable. It is spiral bound and will stand beside the computer while typing. As for being able to tell when a mistake is made, if this book is being used with a computer, the word processing system will most likely show when a mistake is made.The delivery time was outstanding from Trinity City Books.

A great book to learn your typing skills especially if you're a beginner!! Easy to read and follow. Definitely a great book!

Buyer beware: this paperback edition contains only the stories and none of the photographs of the hardcover edition. I consider this quite misleading, as the reviews here mention photography but are clearly referring to a completely different edition that is in hardcover. If you click on the hardcover edition you will see lots of lovely photos. This paperback has tiny engravings at the chapter headings and that's it. I did look at the "look inside" but since that is a limited view it wasn't clear to me that this was only a stripped-down version of the hardcover.

I buy a lot of these sort of books, I am intimate with my ups man. Often I am disappointed as the cover art is the best part of the book. Since Ithink this is one of the BEST COVERS EVER I was afraid this might be the case with Toast and Marmalade...but NO! This book is chock full of Emma telling us why she does what she does, her motivation for working with local manufacturers, her very real relationships with her family and conspirators, and a bit, although not enough, about her design process. If I have one criticism that would be it; there is a lot in the book about the manufacturing process and not enough about the work that takes her from concept to a fully executed design. I want drawings, doodles, whatever she does. The photography is gorgeous and yet it doesn't feel overly styled. I recommend Toast and Marmalade.

If you enjoy Emma's work you will love reading her stories. Her pottery is how she illustrates her stories...what a great story teller!

Carrol L. Henderson has headed the Nongame Wildlife Program of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources since 1977. He is an award-winning wildlife conservationist who has helped bring back eastern bluebirds, bald eagles, peregrine falcons, river otters, and trumpeter swans; an avid wildlife photographer whose images have appeared in the New York Times, Audubon, Birder's World, and Wild Bird; an experienced birding tour leader to Latin America, Kenya, Tanzania, and New Zealand; and the author of many magazine articles and several books. In 2016, the Garden Club of America awarded Henderson the Frances K. Hutchinson Medal, which is given to figures of national importance for distinguished service to conservation. I bought this book to take on a trip to CR. As soon as I received it, I knew it was not what I had in mind. I would not call this a "field guide" as it had so few species included. I took photos in one day of more organisms than this book covered. If you are a traveler who is curious about what you might see, this book might be fine. If you are a hobby naturalist trying to identify actual moths, etc, then this will not help. Disappointing.

This was a gift and greatly appreciated for their upcoming Costa Rica trip!

Good info on inverts of Costa Rica

I know there are more exhaustive guides available but they are too heavy for hiking. This suited my needs well.

Obviously, one book can't cover the hundreds (or thousands) of invertebrate species found in a tropical country. But, there does appear to be a good selection of what are probably the most common species--and certainly enough species to keep the first-time visitor to Costa Rica busy. The format is one species per page. Some species have more than one image if there are different color phases. The images and range maps are excellent.

I liked the book. t covered 50% of what I needed for my biology class.
